After almost 20 years working as a barrister, I came into politics in July 2024 to serve the community I love.

Folkestone and Hythe is where my children grew up, where I served as a trustee of a local charity, and where the most beautiful coastline, sunrises and sunsets unite the community in a love for this wonderful area.

My mother worked as a care assistant her whole life, having come here from the Philippines in the 1970s. My father was an engineer from London. My parents’ values of hard work, respect and compassion drive everything I do.

Folkestone and Hythe was for so many years forgotten by Westminster. Not any longer.

As your first ever Labour MP, I will fight every day to improve your lives and be your voice in Parliament, so we can make this area the best it can be for everyone.

I know how expensive travel can be. That's why I'm glad that, as part of the Great British Summer Savings scheme, Labour is cutting costs for parents by making local bus travel free for children aged 5 - 15 in England throughout August.

Great to have Jacob from Dymchurch Amusements down for the Great British Summer Savings reception at Downing Street!

Dymchurch Amusements, among other businesses in #Folkestone, #Hythe & #RomneyMarsh, will be benefiting from VAT cuts as part of this scheme.

It also means that from 25 June to 1 September, 9,648 families in our area can enjoy cheaper days out at the cinema, theme parks, soft play and kids’ meals in restaurants.

Last week I met with the Shepway Autism Support group in Hythe which provides a space for support for families and carers of autistic children.

We spoke about issues such as access to work, transition from education, the need for shared services and training to assist people with autism within our healthcare system. These conversations are so important to have.

A big thanks to Louise and everyone who attended, your input was invaluable!

*The first commissioner for maternity and neonatal care*

I was proud to support the tireless work of Louise Thompson and the campaigners on the vital issue of securing a Maternity Commissioner. Their campaigning has been inspiring, courageous and relentless - there’s a lot for us politicians to learn.

Today, progress has been made, still more to be achieved, but we have seen a step forward today.

I welcome today’s announcement that the UK will have its first commissioner for maternity and neonatal care. Whoever takes on the role must hold hospitals to account for persistent failures, ensure wide-ranging improvements happen and try to restore families’ faith in maternity and neonatal practices.

Today, Baroness Amos has published her findings on maternity care across multiple NHS trusts, including East Kent, the trust at the centre of Bill Kirkup's 2022 'Reading the Signals' report into the deaths of up to 45 babies. Some progress, yes. But too many families still say they haven't felt the difference. Four years on.

It comes just a week after the Ockenden report on Nottingham, thousands of families who waited years, in some cases over a decade, for acknowledgement. Warnings known since 2015. Six external reviews. All deeply critical. Still the harm continued.

The tragic truth that runs through every major maternity scandal is the same: a failure of listening and accountability. Women said they were frightened. They were ignored.

I led the Westminster Hall debate on a Maternity Commissioner earlier this year. The case has never been stronger.

We cannot keep producing reports and moving on. Families deserve accountability and a system that will not do this again.
